MOVE THE OZARK TRAIN DEPOT
Plans are presently being made to move
Ozark's Historic Train Depot from the old train track on Depot Lane to
an area that is part of Steagall Park on Peacock Street. A grant proposal
backed by the DCCAH and the City of Ozark has been approved by the State
Department of Transportation for a funding requirement of 80/20. Several
fundraising plans are being put together to help raise the $30,000 plus
$15,000 for architectural and engineering fees. The renovation of this
depot will give Ozark a model train facility, with public meeting areas,
historic train displays, and the possibility of city recreational offices.
The following local groups are in support
of making this project a success: The Dale County Genealogical and Historical
Society, the Wiregrass Garden Railway Society, the City of Ozark, and the
Dale County Council of Arts and Humanities (DCCAH). The public is also
invited to participate in supporting this project to help promote the history
of Dale County. Anyone wishing to help, please contact the Mayor's office
or a member of the DCCAH Board of Directors.
One of the first projects to get under
way will be a request for donations of $100 from 300 donors. Interested
parties may mail their donatons in C/O: AnnDora Garner, Ozark Train Depot
Project, Commercial Bank, 208 S. Merrick Ave., Ozark, AL 36360.
